The University of Luxembourg is an international research university with a distinctly multilingual and interdisciplinary character. The University was founded in 2003 and counts more than 6,700 students and more than 2,000 employees from around the world. It ranks #20 in the Young University Ranking 2021 and among the top 250 universities worldwide of the Times Higher Education. The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of its five Departments Mathematics, Physics and Materials Science (DPhyMS), Engineering (DoE), Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine. Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens, in order to better understand, explain and advance society and environment we live in. The Department of Engineering is an interdisciplinary group active in the classical domains of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering and geophysics. The main focus of research is on the development of technological solutions, the sustainable and economical use of resources, the offer of competences for the technological requirements of Luxembourg and the Greater Region industrial and public actors. The DPhyMS has an excellent international reputation for its research on a wide range of fundamental and applied topics from physics of solid-state, polymers, hard metals, liquid crystals, or living matter, to non-equilibrium thermodynamics, processes in solar cells, quantum mechanical effects, data science, and machine learning. DPhyMS is involved in successful collaborations with local industry and foundation of start-ups, as well as a long-standing initiative with the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) to establish a strong pole for materials research in Luxembourg. We also continuously foster exciting interdisciplinary research collaborations on topics related to machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data analytics.
