Captain Salvatore Calabro is the Advice Branch Head in the Office of the NATO Chief Scientist since October 2023. He joined the Italian Naval Academy in 1991, and he is a marine engineer.
Before joining NATO, he was the head of the 6th Division in the Naval Armaments Directorate. His responsibilities included procurement and the management/update of standards related to pressure systems, insulation materials, coatings and safety systems onboard.
Previously, he has been Head of technical support at the Command for Italian naval operations (2019-2022) and responsible for maintenance planning and procurement at the Italian Navy Shipyard in Taranto (2009-2013).
He has held a range of other posts, including the head of propulsion plants section at the Italian Navy training centre (2005-2007), the head of the platform section at the Command for Italian naval operations (2013-2015) and the head of the platform section of the 1st Division in the Naval Armaments Directorate (2015-2019).
He also served onboard as auxiliary plants and propulsion plant officer onboard ITS Vittorio Veneto (1998-2003), Chief Engineer of ITS Comandante Bettica (2004-2005) and Chief Engineer of ITS Luigi Durand de la Penne (2007-2009).
